Understanding the Accessibility Needs of Software Developers with Vision Impairments

This study seeks to expand our understanding of the development process followed by software developers who rely on a screen reader. In particular, we are interested in the tools and devices they use, problems they run into, and areas where existing tools can be improved.

This study consists of two phases:

  1. Survey: to get an idea on the existing tools, systems, and problems software developers with vision impairments use/experience.
  2. Observations: to better understand the processes and problems software developers with vision impairments experience we hope to remotely observe several developers who use screen readers while they develop software.

We will then use the results of this study to build more accessible development tools based on cutting edge research in the design of programming languages.

Eligibility
  1. Must be 18 years old or older.
  2. Work as a software developer for at least 2 years.
  3. Require a screen reader while developing software.
Participation
  1. Take our 30 minute survey: Link to 30-minute Survey
  2. To get more information about our remote-observation study please take this less than 5 minute participation survey: Link to Interview Participation Survey
Potential Benefits

Participating in this study may lead to new tools for developers who use screen readers.
